Getting the Feel Right

I changed gyms.

I didn’t want to, but the reality of Covid in my state pushed it.

Much as I loved the full wall of windows and home-grown feel of my old gym, the staff wasn’t masking up so I changed to the national chain down the street. Now I’m all off-base with my workout routine.

The place feels wrong with way less light. Way less chatting and fewer hello’s. Of course, much of this is the effect of Covid and the masks I needed to feel safe. It’s taking me time to create new ways to get both the workout I need (new machines help) and the feeling I want, so I can relax and enjoy my time there. Without those, I know I’ll find excuses to skip the whole thing.

Okay. So how does adjusting to Covid connect to how I face climate change?

Well, many of the climate change actions I’ve tried start strong and then peter out. Especially when they’re based on someone else’s say-so about the “best” actions to take. Even if I “should” buy my seafood a certain way, it hasn’t stopped me from buying some processed salmon cakes. It seems that doing what you should do may not feel good to me for long.

Choosing a climate change action for me now has to include getting the feel right. It does work for me when I help a local whale pods survive the effects of climate change. I ended up contributing through making art and enjoy the process without a struggle to make the time. This is getting the feel right.

Slowly I’m creating the right feel for working out at the new gym. Scheduling time carefully helps. Also new gloves! A retail splurge is a treat and signals me to embrace this change with steps that feel right for me.
